Contributions to the special collection assess the methodologies used to evaluate violence prevention through urban upgrading initiatives in informal settlements in cities; re-thinking the effect and purpose of walls in suburban communities; vigilantism in informal urban communities; and partnerships of social crime and violence prevention initiatives. A key element of the Citizen Security Dialogues project is its focus on data-driven analysis and the impact of primary and secondary crime and violence prevention initiatives. Today, as we are seeing new dynamics of crime and violence emerge in South Africa, this special collection is especially relevant.
